My whole life, I tried to live up to this expectation of "creative", but in the traditional sense I never was. I couldn't sing, draw, stay motivated enough to write. I once tried to stitch a shirt in high school, but the minute I tried it on, it ripped at the seams! I also loved music, but knew I could never be a singer or song-writer. I was dead set on opening a record label (high school) I would call it effing records. Too bad, digital came and killed even the biggest record labels in the world.
So now what?
I thought, I would start to get involved in the step next to the creative. For example, I am not a musician, but I could manage? In doing that, I found that I could see differently from a traditional artist and come up with a fresh perspective and some new ideas on marketing, ads etc.
In fact, David & Tom Kelly (founder of IDEO) wrote a whole book called, "Creative Confidence" where they state, "We think of creativity as using your imagination to create something new in the world. Creativity comes into play wherever you have the opportunity to generate new ideas, solutions or approaches. "
I took all kinds of tips and tricks from these guys, d.school & more to hone in on this. They believe that everyone is creative and have found that there is a Tibetan saying that "Creative" is our natural state. Unfortunately for us, the word creative has been so boxed that those who are in technical fields like IT or medicine wouldn't dare touch it with a 10 foot pole.
However, all of today's thought leaders have expressed that only those who can create and come up with innovative new ideas are the ones that will survive in the future. This is true especially with the threat of technology taking over sitting on our backs. The thought is, how can we creatively use technology to benefit and really change our world?
Applying this way of thinking in my everyday life, has opened up so many more doors for me in terms of new ideas, path forwards and even application/appreciation to my day job.
Applying the same creative thought process to my KARISH. line.. When I first started on this journey of building a fashion line, I always thought that my weakest point was not being able to draw. However, when you really feel pulled to do something you WILL find a way to make it happen for yourself. So, I started creating boards of things that I saw and inspiration from the fabric pieces that I liked.
How do you express your creative?
I am so proud to announce being part of such a great community such as Open Ideo, where we collaborate and help foster each other's idea.
In the latest challenge my partners and I submitted an idea called Baby's World which is a digital aggregation platform based on social computing for parents.
We ran over 50 interviews and prototyped with so many people and took all their feedback into consideration. Mostly, moms were really excited about this.
