The Goodwill Guilt
I recently published an article on Medium titled "The Goodwill Guilt", which was all about my closet purge. I found a challenge online called Project 333 which is basically 33 items for 3 months without buying anything new. It was a good way to clean out my closet & stay minimal at the same time.
On the way to discovering this project, I was really researching ethical fashion. Some of you may know that I have been working on a clothing line for quite a few years. Although my main mission of this line is to ensure that all females have comfortable event wear, normalizing affordable custom sizes (denormalizing traditional standards), I also wanted to start a way for consumers to up-cycle their old saris or Indian clothes and turn them into new fashion. After my research on the ethics of the fashion industry, up-cycling has become a priority of my line.
This is how I stumbled upon researching for hours on end about ethical fashion and clothing.
Project 333 & Beyond
I am not completely done with this project, I am still testing out my clothes to see what I actually wear A LOT versus not at all. So this is still a work in progress-- however the fact that I did not have ONE PIECE of ethical clothing in my closet really started to bother me.
I believe to be someone who is socially conscious and always talking about self awareness, body positive etc. but my fashion didn't reflect any of that.
As a fashion blogger, I was feeling sick to my stomach over this & so I went researching down a deeper hole.
In that hole, I thought "it would be easier to literally get rid of everything I own and start from scratch
Although the norm. for sustainable fashion is Thrift or borrow before buying anything new, I wasn't feeling right about the fact that though the environmental footprint would be lower that where these fabrics were sourced from still would make me feel guilty.
What is Fast Fashion
Fast fashion can be defined as cheap, trendy clothing, that samples ideas from the catwalk or celebrity culture and turns them into garments in high street stores at breakneck speed.- Good on You

I quickly learned that there are rules to this game.
Brands that I really Love
You guys, I did endless research-- so many sites and these are the ones that I narrowed down to and are going to be my go-to (with dollar sign ratings according to me--because I AM CHEAP)
Minimizing my life has made me feel more light! The rumors are true, when you minimize your life, you have more things of quality that you can bring in. In fact, I find that I have more motivation to write (which I love doing). No, getting dressed in the morning is not easier (because now there are so many combinations to choose from) but I only have one side of my closet occupied which makes me feel good!
I am excited to start this new journey of my life & also to share with you my inspirations for living more ethically & minimally.
I feel that without actually minimizing my closet, I wouldn't be able to shop ethically. When I get bored of my old clothes and now I will turn to only ethical shopping brands (not saying I won't be tempted) but now that I have educated myself on the impacts of clothing production on the environment I will stay true to being more conscious of my choices.

Thought of the day; Sometimes being indecisive & a jack of all trades can be our worst enemy. It keeps us in a grey area that doesn't allow us to move ahead, becuase we are not truly ready to put our best foot forward and splitting our mind into a million different pieces, fear of being put in a box or deciding to put our mind to one thing for too long and restarting with a new idea. Ad much as time is our best friend, it can also be our worst enemy because we can partially decide to do something which takes much longer to fulfill.. but in the end it's only when we decide to dedicate ourselves to something we can actually create and start acting on our vision. Acting can come in many different forms and in pieces via prototypes, user testing etc. but it's when you release, how you release how much time in between that you actually start to see results.

How Empathizing with each other & Creating with Technology is the First Step to having a Positive Impact on the World
Even though there is technology that can help us, we choose not to use it for multiple reasons
A large piece of my 2 years off, I learned and became obsessed with design thinking (DT). Though a buzz word now, something really resonated with me about DT is the art of learning how to put people first & empathize with their needs. This concept applies to everything from within a company to outside a company which is why I found it so phenomenal. The beauty in this was learning how to embrace various points of views & communicating with others.
Studying how other people feel, think, do, and why is all about putting ourselves in the other person's shoes without any judgement. This could apply to everything going on today in our own parts of the world - why do people do what they do? believe what they believe? Majority of the time, we don't know where to begin when investigating this question.
Empathy is the one thing that our society needs; that we are begging for and instead of really trying to understand each other, we are starting to increase our judgement of each other without trying to understand the perspective, resulting in a major divide in our world; when really, we need to come together and fight injustice(s) & create a new way of life together.
From my research, I have learned that we are all confused and don't know what or who to believe. For example, we don't know what to eat , what diets to follow, how to be the healthiest we can be- but the one thing we all have in common is that we know our food is poison. But what are we doing about it? What can help us get to the facts, are there technologies that can help us track where EXACTLY our food comes from? Is there an AI we can build that tells us what's real and what's not? It's crazy to think that we have even started to judge and create divides amongst each other based off of what foods we eat.
Even though there is technology that can help us, we choose not to use it for multiple reasons: 1. because it is not trustworthy, 2. we don't know how & unfortunately for us, technologists don't know how to effectively give it to us. We are lacking empathy on both sides of the equation.
Imagine if we could just ask for what we want, someone could easily build it for us.. for our needs AND we could just trust it? This is what I envision for our future. Taking control of technologies, instead of technologies controlling us.
Once we start to realize that the seed of change is empathizing with each other, the ability to create will come easily & something we can trust.

Why are taking pictures so hard?
When fashion bloggers first started I remembered reading so many of the females that I loved and adored used their boyfriends or significant others to take pictures of their outfits. As a blogger you always want your pictures to be high quality and visually appealing but unless you have someone who is willingly able to do that it's difficult!
For that reason I am blessed enough to A. have a friend who is able to take my pictures and B. BLESSED to have a photographer on payroll
Additionally, you want to be able to have a good amount of outfits and posts for the month so usually in one shot I am taking at least 4 outfits. I used to only shoot 2 outfits & I have upped it to 4 outfits because it simply wasnt enough content for a month between instagram & the blog.
Another large challenge is to actually change in the different outfits. I learned quickly that unless you have a method to how you pack your clothes, accessories, make up etc it's really difficult and confusing! Usually we go into a restaurant and use their bathrooms but don't be fooled I get a lot of whispers like "did she just change' laughs and all that. You really have to have thick skin!
What do I hope to achieve?
I hope to empower/inspire people who believe they are "non-creative" to start creating again. Creativity is our most basic instinct and now it has been boxed into just certain arenas. I show my creativity through my outfits... but ultimately even with the fashion line I am not a designer by study. I do not draw, I had no idea of what the process was before I got a business manager.
Additionally, the clothing industry and the sizes makes me a little angry because before clothing sites like fashion nova it was extremely difficult to find clothes that fit for curvy girls, especially at an affordable price. I want to share with the world where I find my clothes and that all body types can have their own style.. and through my fashion line I want to be able to disrupt fashion norms as they stand today.

And this is why tongue scraping is important. I know, I know most of you are probably saying, "well I brush my tongue" but this is different. You can actually SEE the mucus and bacteria coming off of your tongue. It's kind of gross but kind of like a reality check too.
But there's more...
It's also prevents cavities because it gets rid of all the bacteria in your mouth. I have a lot of cavities too, so I know when my teeth start to feel bad.
Ever since I started scraping this year, it's been a multitude of difference in my mouth......... like it ACTUALLY feels better and more clean! I know, its nuts & maybe unbelievable but I'm kind of mad that I didn't try this sooner.
Another thing, you know how it feels weird to eat an orange after you brush? This will take it away completely-- that nasty minty fresh goes away within seconds of scraping.
I say.. once you scrape you can't go back! I urge you to try it out -- I have linked the picture above to an amazon buy page.
Let me know how it goes!
